What are GelGems? (Frequently asked questions)

What are GelGems made of?

Technically speaking, GelGems are a semi-solid, mechanically resistant, thermoplastic polymer. That’s scientist talk for “squishy, sticky artworks that are irresistibly fun to play with!”

Where can I use my GelGems?

GelGems work best on clean, smooth glass. Try them on windows, glass mirrors, glass computer monitors, drinking glasses and glass shower doors. Because GelGems can leave color or oil marks on some surfaces, we recommend use on glass only. We do not recommend use on car windows. Please see below.

How should I use GelGems?

Express yourself! Put a ring of flowers around your bathroom mirror. A heart on your sweetie’s computer. Tell your neighbors, “Happy Monday!” on your front window. Let your own creativity be the guide. To help you get started, choose some of the theme packs from our GelGems shop.

Can I put GelGems on my wall?

Don’t use GelGems on your walls. Walls are porous, so they will absorb colour and oil from your GelGems, leaving permanent marks.

Can I put GelGems on my car windows?

GelGems should not be used on car windows. Cars can get extremely hot inside, and temperatures above 48 degrees C (120 degrees Fahrenheit) will cause GelGems to melt into a gooey mess.

Can I put GelGems in a window that gets full sunlight?

Sunlight will not damage your GelGems. However, if the window glass reaches temperatures higher than 48 degrees C (120 degrees F), your GelGems will start to melt. Please use good judgment about what windows are appropriate for your GelGems decorations. Car windows, for instance, are not suitable.

Can I put GelGems in the freezer?

GelGems do not suffer damage from freezing temperatures. They will become hard when frozen, then squishy again when they thaw out.

Can I overlap GelGems?

GelGems themselves are porous. That means that if they touch each other, they will bleed color onto one another. Sometimes, this looks neat, but you may choose to keep your GelGems from touching each other.

Can I eat GelGems?

GelGems are completely non-toxic, and they will not harm you if you eat them. But, we don’t recommend eating GelGems because they just don’t taste very nice!. Also, very small children, under 5 years of age, could choke on GelGems if they tried to swallow them. So please, don’t let anyone under the age of 5 play with GelGems.

How long will my GelGems last?

GelGems can be reused over and over. If they get dirty, you can wash them in warm water to make them as good as new. Over time, GelGems that are handled a lot may begin to lose their brightness. Also, since they are made of gel, please take care not to rip or tear the pieces.
